Gunmen abduct UNICAL lecturer, two students

Suspected hoodlums have abducted Stephen Ndifon of the School of Medical Sciences, University of Calabar, UNICAL, and two other students to an unknown destination.

The university don and the students were whisked away at the wee hours of Tuesday.

It was gathered that the dare-devil gunmen numbering seven, who came in speed boat from the Obufa Esuk River at about 4.00 am, shot repeatedly in all direction to scare away before invading the lecturer’s house to abduct him and the students.

A colleague of the lecturer, who gave his name as Emmanuel Jones, said, “They came in from the water which is quite close to the residential quarters and shot sporadically scaring away even our security men before invading Doctor Ndifon’s place to kidnap him and the students staying in his boys’ quarters”.

Vanguard reports that residents regularly contribute money to pay some policemen to keep guard around the quarters but was surprised that the hoodlums did not meet any resistance when they invaded the area.

“We usually contribute money to assist the university security men to keep vigil around the quarters because the place is quite desolate and is frequently invaded by thieves and robbers,” a resident said.

Information Officer of the University, Effiong Eyo said the matter had since been reported to the police and that investigation was in progress.
