The Seventeen local government chairmen of the Social Democratic Party(SDP) in Abia state, have dumped their party’s gubernatorial candidate, Hon. Blessing Nwagba, and adopted the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate and the incumbent, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu as their sole candidate, ahead of the March 9 governorship election in the state.
Addressing newsmen at the NUJ Abia Press centre in Umuahia, the state capital, on Tuesday, the spokesman of the 17 SDP LGA chairmen, Mr. Chijioke Ozems, stated that their adoption was based on the need to have peace in the state, which according to him, can only be achieved if equity is maintained by allowing Ikpeazu to finish his second term.
According to him, “We are appealing to our candidate, Hon Nwagba, to step down in the interest of equity and peace”.
When contacted over the development in a telephone interview on Tuesday, the chairman of SDP, in Abia state, Hon. Chidi Nwosu, said, “We are not aware of the adoption and I am not part of it. We have a governorship candidate in the person of Dame Blessing Nwagba.
“We dissociate the State leadership of SDP from this anti party activities”.
Meanwhile, as at the time of filing this report, efforts by our correspondent to reach the SDP gubernatorial flagbearer in the state, Hon. Blessing Nwagba, for her reaction, was unfruitful.
