Group expresses fears elections may not hold, alleges plan by Jonathan to scuttle process

A Pro-democracy group under the aegis of Nigerians United for Democracy has raised fears that the March 28 and April 11 dates for the general elections are not sacrosanct.

The group, the Nigerian united for democracy also wondered why some political parties had launched negative campaigns against the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Briefing newsmen on behalf of the group in Port Harcourt, Rights activist, Anyakwee Nsirimovu expressed concern about plans by powerful politicians to scuttle the general election.

Nsirimovu called on the National Assembly to take a strong position and assure Nigerians that the democracy of the country was not endangered because of the selfish reasons of politicians.

While calling on Nigerians to resist every plan by some political parties to force the postponement and rigging of the elections, the NUD warned that the INEC Chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega should be allowed to conduct the 2015 general elections.

“We need to prevent a slide into anarchy; we need to take our destiny in our hand. We need to ensure that darkness does not once again descend on our country.

“We are insisting that nothing must change the new dates of March 28 and April 11. Elections must be allowed to hold on these dates.

“Nigeria is on the march again, this time; no one will be allowed to halt the decisive will of the people for democracy and sustainable livelihood.

“We are worried that the incumbent move to frustrate INEC in conducting credible elections by pushing for the Temporary Voter Card which will not allow for the use of Card Readers already procured for checkmating elections rigging.

He continued; “We wish to emphasize that the use of card readers is Nigeria’s biggest hope for addressing election day malpractices.

“The quest to remove the Chairman of the INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega in the middles of a contest further confirms the attempt by President Goodluck Jonathan’s government to undermine the use of PVCs in the country’s forthcoming elections which the main purpose is to perfect plans to rig the March and April polls,” the group alleged.

The Civil society group, the Nigerian United for Democracy, NUD said all Civil society organizations in the country was gearing up for mass rallies all over the country if the general elections are flawed.
