Group asks First Lady to name those who sold her properties

A civil society anti-corruption coalition, the Civil Society Network Against Corruption (CSNAC), has written to the First Lady, Patience Jonathan concerning her allegations of criminal conversion and sale of her property by her trusted allies.

Mrs. Jonathan made the allegations last month during a thanksgiving event, saying some people close to her had sold her property while she was sick and receiving treatment abroad.

CSNAC in a statement by its chairman, Olanrewaju Suraju, said those actions bordered on corruption and were in opposition to the battle against corruption, hence the First Lady must make the names of those involved public.

The group reminded the First Lady that failure on her part to make public disclosure on the matter was tantamount to an assumption of shady dealings in the procurement of the property in the first instance.

I t said, “As criminal matters are against the state and prosecution can be instituted by any citizen of Nigeria, we therefore seek the leave of Her Excellency to go ahead and officially petition the Inspector General to investigate the matter. As a civil servant; Permanent Secretary in the Bayelsa State Civil service, it is our humble belief that these properties are declared to the code of conduct bureau in the First Lady’s assets declaration form, as provided for in the law”.

Mrs. Patience Jonathan,

First Lady,

Federal Republic of Nigeria,

State House,

ABUJA.

Your Excellency

RE: PROSECUTION OF PERSONS ACCUSED OF CONSPIRACY IN THE ALLEGED SALE OF YOUR PROPERTIES WITHOUT AUTHORITY

Civil Society Network Against Corruption (CSNAC) is a coalition of over hundred and fifty Anti- corruption organizations whose primary aim is to constructively combat corruption vigorously and to ensure the effective monitoring of the various Anti-graft agencies in its activities in the fight against corruption and to enthrone transparency, accountability, probity, and total commitment in the fight to eradicate corruption in Nigeria

Firstly we want to use this medium to felicitate with her Excellency on her recovery and pray the Almighty God continue to keep Her Excellency in good health’

It was reported in the February 17th edition of iREPORTS-NG.COM an online newspaper and several other newspapers that during your speech at the thanksgiving party organized to celebrate your recovery, it was stated that some unscrupulous persons, close to you had proceeded to and attempted selling your properties on the belief that you were likely to survive the undisclosed ailment for which you were undergoing multiple surgical attention.

These acts perpetuated by these individuals are criminal in nature. We believe that Her Excellency as a first lady should be a role model to Nigerians who does not harbor or condone such acts on her person or anybody else. It can be assumed that these properties are either improperly documented or originally purchased by proxy for a sale attempts to have subsisted in the absence of appropriate authorizing letters from the First lady.

As criminal matters are against the state and prosecution can be instituted by any citizen of Nigeria, we therefore seek the leave of Her Excellency to go ahead and officially petition the Inspector General to investigate the matter. As a civil servant; Permanent Secretary in the Bayelsa State Civil service, it is our humble believe that these properties are declared to the code of conduct bureau in the First lady’s assets declaration form, as provided for the laws

While looking forward to appropriate public disclosure and action on this matter, We wish the First Lady good health and long life

Olanrewaju Suraju

Chairman
