Group applauds Senate for promoting peace, unity in ministerial screening

An Abuja-based civil society group, Good Governance Project Initiative, GGPI, has commended the Senate leadership over the manner and poise in which the ministerial nominees were screened, stressing that the exercise “has proven doubters wrong as peace, unity and cordiality were promoted in the entire exercise.”

The group, which x-rayed the screening process in a statement issued yesterday by its National Coordinator, Innocent Ebirim, lauded the upper chambers of the National Assembly, particularly the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, for the way they went about with the process.

It hailed the Senate for, “ensuring justice peaceful and robust exercise unlike in the past when the exercise is characterised by bitterness, rumour and commotion from beginning to the end. This atmosphere of peace and conviviality should be pursued to the end to promote a successful confirmation exercise.”

GGPI noted with satisfaction the fair hearing granted to all the petitioners and the petitioned which it said was the major reason the tension subsided and this “element of fair hearing should be sustained. People with previous petitions should please stop to enable the Senate concentrate on the job.

“The Senators are commended for exhibiting patriotism, maturity and unity irrespective of party and personal differences in conducting confirmation hearing of the majority of the nominees. Even when they disagree, such disagreement is conducted with great caution and civility.

“The unity, peace and cordial atmosphere witnessed in the confirmation exercise is attributed to the legitimacy of Saraki led leadership which has twice received thunderous vote of confidence in the recent past. This is the reason Saraki should be supported as the Senate President.

“GGPI therefore urges the Senate to put the nation first as it has done during the hearing process when it will go into the executive session for the proper and final confirmation of the ministerial nominees,” the group stated.
