Atletico Madrid manager, Diego Simeone, has said Antoine Griezmann is a potential 2016 Ballon d’Or winner, after the forw
ard scored twice in their 5-0 win over Sporting Gijon on Saturday.
Simeone argued that his star player’s goal-scoring form, stands him out as the best player in Europe.
“For me, last year Griezmann was the best player in Europe, I have no doubt about what I say,” Simeone said.
“He reached the finals of both the Champions League and Euro 2016, scoring many goals, and scored many goals in La Liga too. The consistency he has makes him stronger. I hope he is up there for the Ballon d’Or, as he is in great form, and will get even better if he continues like this.”
Atletico have bounced back from an indifferent start to the season, when they scored once in two games. Simeone insisted that it is not done to his team not creating enough chances.
“We’ve been making chances in all our games, [Kevin] Gameiro, Fernando [Torres], Griezmann have had pretty clear chances to score,” he added.
“That is normal, this is football, it happens. Today, quickly, the team found the way to goal.”
