A 36-year old grandmother, Bosede Oyetunde was on Wednesday sent to one month imprisonment by an Akure Chief Magistrate Court for allegedly throwing a-day-old baby boy into the bush.

The grandmother and her daughter, Opeyemi Isaac, 20, were sentenced by Chief Magistrate Mrs O.A Edwin to a one month imprisonment each, for conspiracy and attempted murder.

According to the police prosecutor, DSP Ojumu Olayemi, the convicts committed the offence at about 8:00pm at Omotoso Ore road Ondo State in the Akure Magisterial District on July 4, 2017.

Olayemi said the grandmother and her daughter conspired together to commit felony to wit murder and did unlawfully attempt to kill a day old baby boy by wrapping the child in a nylon bag and dumping him into the bush.

According to the prosecution, the offence committed contravened sections 516, and 320(2) of the criminal Code Cap 37, Vol1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.

While the charge sheet was read to them, the accused persons pleaded guilty to the two-count charges.

Olayemi said the accused persons were arrested by police division Igbotako owing to a tip-off.

The grandmother who did not deny her action, said fear of how to take care of the baby prompted her action.

In her ruling, Chief Magistrate Mrs O.A Edwin sentenced the accused (Oyetunde) to one month imprisonment.

She also ordered her to render two months community service in Igbotako police station.

Edwin ordered the second accused person who was the mother of the baby to go for mental assessment because the court observed she was not normal, mentally.

She thereafter ordered the mother to be breastfeeding the baby in Ondo State children home.
