National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has been lauded for deploying corps members to agriculture, rural infrastructure, rural health and education. Gov. Theordore Orji of Abia Orji made the commendation at the swearing in of 2015 Batch ‘A’ corps members at NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Umunna in Bende Local Government Area of Abia on Thursday.
Orji, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Agu Mkpa, held that such deployment would help in repositioning the scheme to meet the nation’s needs.
He promised that the State Government will cooperate with the scheme towards effective utilisation of corps members posted to the state.
The governor assured the corps members of adequate security and urged them to contribute their quota toward the development of the state.
“Government is determined to ensure that whatever sacrifice you will make to better our state will never go unrewarded’’, the governor assured.
He urged the corps members to utilise the opportunity provided by the scheme to strategise toward creating a better future for themselves.
Commissioner for Youth Development and Chairman, state NYSC Governing Board, Mr Onwuka Uzoma, said orientation helped to prepare corps members physically and mentally for the challenges of the service year.
Uzoma, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr Onyi Wamma, said the state placed high premium on hard work and excellent performance.
He, therefore, urged the corps members to strive to render selfless service to their host communities during the service year.
State Coordinator of the scheme, Mr Omotayo Adewoye, said 2,300 corps members were deployed to Abia.
Adewoye explained that the number comprised 1,246 males and 1,054 females, adding that they had been well-behaved since their arrival in the camp.
He charged them to be focused “in order to benefit immensely from this life-time experience’’, saying that the orientation was carefully packaged for their all-round development.” (NAN)
