The Delta State Governor, Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa has charged the Chairman of Uvwie Local Government Council, Hon. Stella Dabona to end illegal collection of money from traders at the Effurun Market.
He gave the directive as a measure to stop the turning of access roads leading to the market to shops.
Governor Okowa, who was represented by the Speaker of the Delta State
House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Ovwigho Monday Igbuya made the appeal in a remark he presented at the commissioning of newly built lock-up stores in Effurun market.
“Mr. Chairman, you are not going to be the one that will come and carry out
the orders of council, but your officials whom you are going to delegate powers on.
“They must come here and carry it out actively, not collecting money from traders. That is the truth because, when you send in your revenue officers, when you send in your health officers, when you send in your sanitation officers to go and clear the place, rather than do what you have asked them to come and do, they will begin to collect money from squatters.
“So, I beg you as a council, you
must carry out the law properly so that the traders themselves particularly the ones that are inside, will have reasons to be inside.
“On your part, the traders, do not give money to anybody asking you to
squat because if you do not give money, they will not encourage you to squat.”
Governor Okowa also commended the Uvwie Council Chairman and the Eki-Ufuoma Traders Association for the
partnership in building the market in the face of dwindling resources plaguing virtually all the councils.
He said, “This is a great testimony. I don’t think since the life span of this administration, we have this opportunity of witnessing this
type of project by any local government council in the face of the dwindling resources that councils are passing through now.
“This is a wonderful experience. I must commend the leadership of
Uvwie Local Government Council for a bold initiative. It is an opportunity for me to say that other council areas should emulate, explore these opportunities that are opened and develop the council areas and of course increase the revenue base of the councils.”
In a chat with DAILY POST, the Uvwie Local Government Council
Chairman, Hon.(Mrs.) Stella Dabona enjoined the traders and people of Effurun market to maintain peace and keep the newly built lock up stores to standards.
Dabona stated that the Uvwie Local Government Council went into Private Partnership with Eki-Ufuoma Traders Association.
Earlier in an address, the Head of Personnel in Uvwie Local Government Council, Mr. Austin Maduku stated that the newly built lock up stores cost
sixty two million three hundred thousand naira.
