Few weeks after Lagos State Government shut down the popular Ladipo market over poor environmental sanitation, traders at Onitsha, the commercial nerve of South-East may be experiencing similar fate soon.

Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State has threatened to shut down markets in the area over poor sanitation.

The Governor issued the threat while inspecting work in some parts of Upper Iweka and Bridge-Head, Onitsha. He warned Onitsha residents and traders to either improve the sanitary condition of the environment or face government sanction.

Gov Obi expressed deep regrets that while government was spending huge resources to clean up and rebuild infrastructural facilities in Onitsha to curtail adverse effect of flood, following predictions and warning of the coming rain and possible flooding, residents were bent on frustrating its efforts.

He frowned at indiscriminate dumping of refuse, littering and blocking the drainage system, warning that henceforth any ware or goods displayed on any part of the road would be confiscated and leaders of the traders would be arrested and detained.

He ordered the immediate removal of all vehicles in front of NITEL, Upper Iweka, warning that any vehicle caught loading in the area would be confiscated.
