Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State and Mrs. Bianca Ojukwu, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Spain and wife of late Igbo leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, on Wednesday, separately condemned in strong terms the demolition of Ojukwu Memorial Library in Owerri by unknown persons.

Speaking during an assessment tour of the demolished property, they described the action of the evil doer as a sheer act of wickedness, lamenting that the public would have benefited greatly from the use of the library facilities.

According to Obi, “the effort it took to build this library should be appreciated and not repaid in this manner”.

On her own part, Bianca said: “I am astonished that an Igbo man can be capable of such wickedness; to destroy something built in memory of a man the entire Igbo nation is so proud of”.

The leader of the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Mr Ralph Uwazurike who funded the building of the library , expressed his pain over the demolition.

He said that work would continue on the project despite the setback.

It could be re-called that the Ojukwu Memorial Library building in Owerri, the Imo State capital, was last week reduced to rubble by unknown persons.

The building which is located at 2 Ralph Uwazuruike Street, Area G, New Owerri was being built by the leader of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and the Ezeigbo, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, in honour of the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.

The building, when completed, would have also served as a research centre on Igbo studies.
