Governor Sule Lamido
Against the backdrop of the attack on President Goodluck Jonathan’s convoy, Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State has urged traditional rulers to caution their subjects against harassment of any leader in the name of politics. This was as he expressed happiness that the trend has not being recorded in the state thus far.
Speaking on Sunday in Kazaure while paying homage to the Emir of Kazaure, Alhaji Najib Adamu, in the course of PDP campaign tour of the area, Lamido said that the recent attacks on leaders were bad for the nation’s democracy. He enjoined monarchs to educate their subjects on what leadership was all about and how people should honour and respect those in power.
His words: “I am not happy with the ugly development where our youths are used to boo leaders during political campaigns. It is a bad precedent that everyone must rise against.
“As Nigerians, we have been living peacefully, people from the North have been living and doing business in the South and those from the South have been living and peacefully doing business in the North, therefore, we have to avoid doing anything that will endanger their lives.”
The Governor tasked the Monarch to talk to all politicians, himself included, to shun politics of bitterness, hatred and rancour because if there was no peace, there would not be any development and progress.
He further advised that Emirs should ask Muslim clerics to include in their sermons the teaching of Islam on how people should respect leaders and live peacefully irrespective of their faiths. This was as he insisted that all leaders in the northern part of the country have responsibilities to warn youths against violence before, during and after the February elections.
In his response, the Emir appreciated the advice from the governor and called on politicians in the state as well as in the country at large to play politics by the rules. He asserted that every citizen should be allowed to belong to any political party and vote for his or her choice candidate without any harassment.
Alhaji Adamu, while pointing out that his emirate has been preaching peace and tolerance, assured that it is not about relenting in efforts to continue disseminating the message.
