Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State has commended the Special Task Force responsible for the maintenance of peace in the State, for rehabilitating 25 boreholes in some communities, who were bedeviled by the civil unrest in Riyom, Bakin-Ladi and Jos South Local Government Areas of the State.
The Governor who was represented by his Deputy, Mr. Ignatius Longjan while commissioning the boreholes in Jol and Sho villages in Riyom and Barkin-Ladi Local Government Areas respectively on Monday, said the aforementioned communities have suffered devastation since the sectarian violence broke out in 2001, urging the communities to embrace the STF personnel for the security of lives and property.
According to him, “I want to commend the STF for the generosity. They are here to for our security but they have also rehabilitated our boreholes to ensure that we get good drinking water. I want you to imbibe the spirit of maintenance culture so that you can enjoy this facility for a very long period of time”.
He commiserated with families who lost their loved ones and property as a result of the unrest that engulfed the communities.
The Governor who said that although, reports reaching him suggest that the STF have not been able to apprehend those perpetrating the act in the villages due to lack of accessible road, pledged government’s commitment to hasten the completion of the ongoing road network linking Jol-Bachit in Riyom to Barkin-Ladi Local Government Area, to enable the security forces checkmate the activities of miscreants.
Jang further stated that development was made possible in the crisis prone areas, following the return of peace, adding that if not so, contractors wouldn’t have agree to mobilized to site.
In his earlier remarks, Commander of the Special Task Force, Major General Henry Ayoola said what propelled them to venture into the exercise as a corporate social responsibility, is to make the communities believe that they were there to protect them.
Ayoola said the project which was executed by One Plateau Peace Initiative was geared towards ensuring lasting peace in the State.
He said the people have been suffering from bad drinking water, adding that “the boreholes were in the community before the coming of STF, so we feel it is good that we rehabilitate them”.
The Commander urged the people to know that peace is a collective responsibility and called on everyone to contribute towards ensuring permanent peace in the state.
He stressed that, the trauma healing campaign was to ensure genuine forgiveness for enduring peace in the state.
In their separate remarks, Chairmen of Barkin-Ladi and Riyom Local Governments, Hon. Emmanuel Loman and Engr. Sam Gyang Audu pledged their supports for the STF in order to ensure lasting peace in the state.
