Governor Dickson laments spate of insecurity in Bayelsa

The Bayelsa State Governor, Hon. Seriake Dickson has expressed deep concern over the increasing wave of kidnapping and other forms of criminality in parts of the State.

Dickson, who spoke shortly after a meeting of the State Security Council late Tuesday in Yenagoa, however, restated his commitment to stem the unfortunate tide of events and happenings that had beclouded the state in recent times.

He revealed that his administration had finalized plans to unfold a comprehensive security framework to address the current trend of insecurity across the state.

Consequently, the governor warned that anybody found culpable will be dealt with in accordance with the criminal laws of the state and the country.

Dickson, however, admonished the people not to hastily ascribe motives behind the recent kidnappings, arguing that the acts were considered and treated purely as a a crime, pending the outcome of the investigations.

While pledging his administration’s resolve to deal decisively with those behind the acts of criminalities, the governor said that efforts were being stepped up to ensure the safety of lives and property of all residents.

He called on youths in the state not to allow themselves to be used under whatever guise to perpetrate any crime, warning that no one would be spared when caught.

Dickson enjoined the people of the State to go about their legitimate duties without any fear of molestation, assuring that security agencies had been put on red alert to track down criminals and their cohorts.

DAILY POST reports that the cloud of insecurity hovering over the state following the fallout of the Dec. 5 governorship elections in the state has pitched the ruling PDP and the opposition APC in a war of words.

The APC governorship candidate, Chief Timipre Sylva has consistently accused Dickson of orchestrating the violence and criminality that had plagued the state before and after the disputed elections.

A statement issued by Chief Nathan Egba, who is the Director of Media and Publicity, Sylva-Igiri Governorship Campaign Organization, accused Governor Dickson of abandoning security matters and hounding perceived political enemies.

“The APC is worried at the increasing rate of violent crime, including kidnappings across the state, which is believed to be a direct result of the total abandonment of governance by the Dickson-led administration in favour of politics,” the statement said.

Egba said that the APC in the state was worried that the desperation of Governor Dickson to win the coming rerun election in the state might just push him and his party to throw all caution to the wind.

The statement called on security agencies in the state to step up their intelligence gathering and track down all those plotting to cause mayhem ahead of the rerun elections.
