Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has broken silence over his relationship with former Governor Olusegun Mimiko who is his immediate predecessor in office.
Akeredolu who disclosed that Mimiko is a friend, noted that he’s not covering up for him.
There have been allegations that there was an unholy alliance between Akeredolu and Mimiko which made the present Governor to declared that he was not probing Mimiko’s administration.
It was rumored that Mimiko secretly backed Akeredolu to win the 2016 governorship election in the state.
But, Akeredolu said the former governor left the state treasuries emptied.
The Governor was answering questions from members of the public during his one year anniversary media chat.
He said “Yes, Mimiko is my friend; I cannot deny him because politics will come and go but your friend will remain your friend. We were in University of Ife together in 1974. I am not covering him. He owed 7 months salary left unpaid. He knows me, I know him; he knows that there is no way I could cover up or hide anything
“I have made it clear what we met on ground and the problem we are facing I enumerated the financial deficit we met on ground that came up to N220billion, the state was in debt. So, in that sense, there is no way I can cover anybody.”
Besides, Akeredolu said Mimiko should explain why he did not pay salary for seven months before his tenure expired if actually he left N20billion in government’s coffer.
