On the heels of his inauguration for second tenure, Rivers State Governor, Barr. Nyesom Wike has been nominated as Ambassador-at-large by the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC).
Another nomination which followed the Board resolution of the International agency on Friday was that of the Comptroller General of Nigeria Prisons, Mr Ahmed Ja’faru.
Speaking with DAILY POST in Abuja over the development, the head of IHRC, Nigeria Central Office and Africa, Ambassador Dr. Friday Sani, said Nigeria was strategic in leading diplomatic missions, hence, the duo were nominated by the International body after a thorough scrutiny by the body’s counsels.
He stressed that the Comptroller General of Prisons, Mr. Ahmed Ja’faru, who was appointed in 2016 by President Muhammadu Buhari, has carried out extensive reforms of the nation’s Prisons, a development he said was in line with the International protocols of IHRC.
According to him, the International Human Rights Commission also took notation of Rivers State Governor’s implementation of Criminal Justice Administration Act, 2015, insisting that it was a global commitment that rights of citizens must be strictly adhered at all costs.
Sani said, “The governing board of IHRC today approved nomination of Rivers State Governor, Barr. Nyesom Nwike as Ambassador-at-large of the International Human Rights Commission.
“At the pleasure of the Board, the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Prisons, Mr Ahmed Ja’faru was also nominated as Ambassador-at-large.
“Gladly these notable citizens were strictly investigated on the orders of IHRC, Secretary General, Rafal Marcin Wasik at world headquarters with satisfactory precedence in human rights protocols.”
Ambassador Sani, however, stated that the appointment which has been communicated to the world’s headquarters of the IHRC, was subject to further processes.
