Gov. Obiano orders search party for body of man lost to flood

The Anambra state Governor, Chief Willie Obiano has ordered that a search party should commence search for the body of Mr. Ugochukwu Ofiaeli, who was alleged to have been carried away by flood at Nnewi, last week.

Governor Obiano, who was at the home of the deceased to commiserate with members of his family, ordered relevant bodies to immediately get down to work and ensure that the body was found.

Mr. Ofiaeli of Egbu-Umuenem, Otolo Nnewi, a 45-year-old man, was alleged to have been carried away by flood last week, along Okwuani-Ezi Ogwugwu road, Nnewi, and has not been seen since then.

Obiano, who met with members of the deceased’s family, reassured them that government will find their missing relation, whether dead or alive.

He also visited the scene of the incident, where he inspected the cause of the flood, while saying that a joint team comprising men of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra, OCHA, brigade, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the state ministry of Works would make up the search team.

The Governor directed the Ministry of Works to redesign the road and create appropriate water channels to guard against a recurrence of such incidents.

He also paid a condolence visit to the family of Pastor Salvation Samuel of Amawbia community, who lost their 14-year-old daughter, Ebubechukwu in a flash flood close to the Governor’s lodge, early this week.

Obiano cautioned against being impatient whenever one encounters flash flood, but to allow the water to subside no matter how small they may seem, noting that it is more profitable to lose time than to lose lives.

The state has since the coming of the rainy season this year lost citizens to flood, occasioned by poor drainage system, especially in Onitsha. This has also prompted the de-silting of blocked drainage, by the state government.
