The Centre referee who handled last Sunday’s NPFL match between Gombe and Rivers Utd has been suspended from further handling of matches till the end of the ongoing season.
According to the decision of the NFF Referees Committee endorsed by the Head of Refereeing Unit of the NFF/Secretary of the Referees Committee of the NFF, Sani Zubairu, FIFA RTD, the Referee, Agboola Sarafa of Osun State Referees Council has to be in the cooler till the end of the season.
Zubairu disclosed that the decision to stop the referee was as a result of “poor handling and sheer display of incompetence which affected the outcome of the match.”
The head of the refereeing unit maintained that a concise approach was adopted by usage of the video clips and report of the assessment found the referee wanting in the discharge of his duties and gross abuse of the laws of the game in the said match.
The sanctioned referee was recommended to the disciplinary Committee for further action.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Referees Association, NRA, President, Tade Azeez has reiterated that the association shall not condone any acts by referees to bring the game to disrepute, warning that, “Any match official found wanting in unethical acts or Officiating not in conformity to the laws of the game, LOG, in any match shall face the music with adequate punishment.”
