The Gombe State Police Commissioner, Austin Iwar has said that about 33 police officers under the state command lost their lives in the course of discharging their duties in 2015.

Iwar made the disclosure in Gombe on Thursday during his meeting with the officers of the command which was part of the command’s activities to mark the remembrance of its falling heroes.

He said, “About thirty three officers died while fighting insurgency or while providing protective services to the citizenry.

“They remain foremost in our minds because so many of us knew them and worked with them; they are part of a long legacy of bravery.

“But no matter how they died, they died having bravely answered the call of duty.

“On the days they paraded for duty, they answered yes to every assignment no matter the danger.

“It has been said that all great things are simple and most can be expressed in a single word.

Iwar said the officers that were remembered were examples of the true meaning of what it meant to be a police officer.
