Ghana Election: Mahama concedes defeat, calls Akufo-Addo

Ghana’s incumbent president, John Mahama has conceded defeat in this year’s presidential election.

This was confirmed by RED’s founding partner, Adebola Williams, who worked on Nana Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s campaign.

Akufo-Addo received the call at 7.51pm, Ghanaian time.

Williams tweeted: “GhanaDecides#GhanaHasDecided At 7:51 PM President John Mahama called to congratulate concede Nana Akufo-Addo #MrPresident #StateCraft.”

Akufo-Addo seemed to confirm this by tweeting: “Wait for it … Wait for it … Wait for it … Wait for it … Wait for it … Wait for it … Wait for it … #ChangeHasCome

Earlier in the day, two popular private radio stations in Ghana reported that Akufo-Addo, who contested under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has won the polls.

Nana-Addo won the election with an absolute majority over the ruling President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress, NDC.

The results, the station said, was based on its count of 233 constituencies, out of 275.

Citi FM declared that Akufo-Addo garnered 54.97% based on 231 constituencies, whereas, Joy FM’s website showed the opposition candidate winning 53.27% of the vote and Mahama with 44.93 percent.
