Germany coach, Joachim Low has explained why Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil was dropped from the German squad that defeated Sweden 2-1 in the second game on Saturday.
Germany, who is the World Cup holder, was staring down the barrel of elimination as Ola Toivonen put Sweden ahead in the first half.
But Marco Reus levelled before Toni Kroos’ sublime strike in injury time rescued a vital win for Low’s side.
Ozil watched the entire game from the bench as Low decided not to field the midfielder.
The 29-year-old has been heavily criticised for his performance in the 1-0 defeat to Mexico last Sunday.
But the coach told reporters that the Arsenal midfielder is still a key part of his plans when asked why the former Real Madrid player did not play a minute.
He said, “We have strong competition with us in the squad. We will still need his creativity in the tournament.”
