The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Hon Opeyemi Falegan, has said genuine reconciliation among members of the party remains key in its bid to reclaim power from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 general elections.
Falegan who said PDP victory in the recent Senatorial by-election in Pain State was possible in view of the unity of purpose among members of the Senators Ahmed Markafi and Ali Modu Sherif factions, urged members at all levels to take a cue to enable the party reenact its winning streaks.
The United Kingdom-based politician said in a statement on Tuesday that the recent Supreme Court judgment on the leadership crisis that erstwhile rocked the party should be explored to strengthen and as well reposition the PDP.
According to the PDP chieftain, the Apex Court verdict is a welcome development as it will assist the party to kick-start a process of taking over power at the center in 2019 general elections.
He said: “The latest scenario has again shown that PDP is a party that believes in the rule of law. It also shows PDP members as people who respect the Nigerian Constitution as a bidding force to a greater country.
“The expressions of fundamental human rights by the two key players in the tussle, Sen Alimodu Sheriff and Sen. Ahmed Makarfi were embarked upon to save the party from total collapse and extinction, hence the need for a genuine reconciliation after the matter has been laid to rest.”
Falegan, who said the way the leadership crisis was resolved should be a recipe to members who had erstwhile lost confidence in the party and as well attract new members in order to make it more formidable and united for the task ahead, added: “What we need now is unity and cooperation of all. At the same time, we should see the judgment as an opportunity to correct all wrongs in the party since no single faction can pilot the affairs of the party to a promised land.
“PDP is a big umbrella and it can accommodate all interests without rocking boats to the extent of destroying the platform, hence the need to always respect the feelings of all members across the board at all times.”
While congratulating Makarfi, Hon. Falegan described him as a man of integrity, honour and charisma capable of handling the affairs of the party with sanctity of all feelings and interest.
He also lauded Sherif’s sportsmanship and political acumen, and called on all party supporters to remain committed and loyal to the course of the PDP more than ever before under the latest atmosphere.
The United Kingdom based Politician called on all and sundry to join hands with the National Chairman to sanitize the party and build a great one that can take over power from the APC in 2019.
He said: “The chairman and members of his committee cannot do it alone, therefore all hands must be on deck to form a structure capable of defeating the ruling APC”.
