Contrary to claims that Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State is the hotbed of violence in the Niger Delta, the United States Consular General, Mr. John Bray has declared that Gbaramatu Kingdom is very “peaceful.”
The Consul General made the declaration during a chat with newsmen shortly after inspecting the Nigerian Maritime University, NMU in Kurutie community after a closed door meeting with the Pere of Gbaramatu Kingdom, HRM. Oboro Gbaraun II Agadagba Aketekpe at his palace in Oporoza, Headquarters of Gbaramatu Kingdom.
The declaration is coming a day after the Olu of Warri Kingdom,HRM. Ogiame Ikenwoli allegedly urged him to prevail on the United States Government to pressure the Nigerian Government to deploy more military base in the creeks of Delta.
Bray who also visited Kokodiagbene community said ,”the weather is peaceful and we are engaging communities with some of the issues they are facing and resolving them, there is nothing new here. This is a fact finding. Recommendations will come in the future.”
Bray described his closed door meeting with the Pere of Gbaramatu Kingdom, HRM. Oboro Gbaraun Agadagba Aketekpe as, ” productive and hospitable like the one we had outside. It was exchange of remarks like the one outside,” noting that his visit to the area will further enhance the ties between the Gbaramatu people, the State and the Federal Governments including the Niger Delta region.
Earlier, the Gbaramatu Traditional Council in a statement signed by Chief Wellington Okrika and Chief Alfred Bubor told the United States Consul General, Mr. John Bray that there was no need for heavy military presence in Gbaramatu Kingdom.
Gbaramatu Traditional Council urged Mr. John Bray to prevail on the United States Government to look critically into the militarization, under-development and Political intrigues in Gbaramatu with a view to proffering lasting solutions so that the country as well as the Niger Delta region can have peace.
The Gbaramatu Traditional Council statement which was read by Chief Clark Gbenewei before the US Consul General stressed the need for the United State Government to prevail on the Nigerian Government especially if it must increase its revenues to sustain the economy of the nation.
