Police intercepts car loaded with thumb-printed ballot papers as thugs knock off voter’s tooth

The Police Command in Kano State has sent more reinforcement of security personnel to Gama ward of Nasarawa local government to beef up security at polling units located in the ward.

The Public Relations Officer of the Command, DSP Abdullahi Haruna, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano.

He said that the deployment of additional security personnel to the areas followed the visit by the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Anthony M

icheal, to the area.

He said that following the report on security challenges at the area, the DIG visited the ward to assess the security situation there.

According to him, the deployment of additional security personnel was necessary as part of efforts to enhance security as well as ensure the protection of lives and property in the affected areas.

“The DIG has visited Gama ward to assess the situation and had since sent more reinforcement to protect lives and property,” he said, adding that the situation had since been brought under control.

On the alleged arrest of the commissioner for special Duties, Muktar Ishaq, the Police spokesman denied the story, saying “I am not aware of arrest of any Commissioner”.

Ganduje vs Abba Yusuf: APC replies PDP’s call for cancellation of election

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has responded to the call for the cancellation of the governorship election made by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Kano State.

Chairman of the APC in Kano, Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas, said there were no grounds for the cancellation of the rerun election currently going on in some parts of the State.

DAILY POST reported earlier that the PDP had called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to totally cancel the election, citing invasion of the state by thugs.

However, the APC denied all the allegations raised by the PDP.

According to Abbas, “The call by the PDP for cancellation of election was uncalled-for because the election is still ongoing.

“INEC should ensure conclusion of the election.

“PDP should wait for the final result of the poll and then take legal action if not satisfied with it. That is what the law provided.

“I think PDP failed to mobilise its people that’s all.”

Ganduje Vs Abba-Yusuf: PDP calls for cancellation of supplementary election in Kano

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has called for the immediate cancellation of the rerun election currently going on in Kano state.

The Acting State Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, said this in a press briefing on Saturday

He described the exercise as a “Charade”

According to him, “what we have in Kano is nothing but sham”.

“The ruling party in the state, APC, has mobilized thugs to take over all the 208 polling units in the state.

“These thugs are imported from Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, Plateau and other neighboring states.” Bichi said.

Security operatives take over Kano streets, enforces restrictions

Security has been beefed up in and around Kano metropolis as the governorship re-run election progresses in parts of the state.

NAN reports that armed policemen deployed to enforce the restriction of human and vehicular movement are patrolling some of the major streets of the city to ensure total compliance of the order.

Some of the security personnel were also seen covering some of the areas believed to be volatile even though elections are not taking place there.

The policemen have also been stationed along some major streets of the city.

Most of the residents of the city have complied with the restriction order.

NAN reports that some journalists covering the poll had earlier escaped lynching by some suspected thugs at Suntulma Primary School in Gama ward of Nasarawa Local Government Area of the state.

The newsmen who were in the area to monitor the exercise were chased out of the place by the hoodlums.

The re-run election is being conducted to decide the winner between two candidates – Abba Kabir-Yusuf of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 1,014,477 votes, and incumbent Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who got 987,810 votes in the first poll conducted on March 9.

The margin between the candidates stood at 26,655 votes in favour of Kabir-Yusuf.

The people of Kano State will on Saturday return to their polling units to conclude the governorship election in the state.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had while announcing results from other states, declared the governorship poll in Kano and  5 other states inconclusive.

The supplementary election would hold across 28 affected local government areas, LGAs and 207 polling units.

A total of 128,324 registered voters are expected to cast their votes in the election scheduled for Saturday.

However, results collated so far show that the PDP has a total of 1,014,353 votes from 43 local governments while the APC is trailing with 987,819 votes.

The supplementary election would say a lot about the political clout of a former governor of the state, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, and incumbent governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, and their relevance in the state for at least, the next four years.

DAILY POST brings you live updates of events as they unfold in the Kano State supplementary poll.
