Ganduje encouraging criminality by granting cattle rustlers amnesty – Group

Mixed reactions have continued to trail the recent amnesty given to some cattle rustlers by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State.

A group under the aegis of Concerned Indigenous People of Kano (CIPK) on Tuesday described the action as “encouraging criminality in the State.”

A press statement signed by its Chairman, Mallam Bashir Shuaibu Kiru, condemned “in totality the recent amnesty given to 39 cattle rustlers by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State.”

“These people have rustled thousands of cattle and have killed scores of ordinary Nigerians who are struggling to earn their daily bread.

“It is shocking to see the person saddled with the responsibility of providing security and welfare of the citizens of a state releasing criminals to move freely.

“Is Governor Abdullahi Ganduje encouraging criminality in Kano State?” The statement asked.

CIPK further noted that it was unfortunate that the Governor gave the rustlers money, adding that “this will encourage criminals to rustle cows or any other criminal act, knowing that if they are apprehended, the will be giving amnesty.”

“We call on the Governor to redress his steps from taking such actions, as he is setting a dangerous precedence.

“The so called amnesty has not changed anything, because cattle rustling has continued unabated and our people will have no option but to resort to self help in dealing with these criminals, if the law cannot punish them to serve as deterrent to others,” it added.
