Gambia: Barrow confirms Jammeh has agreed to vacate office

New president of The Gambia, Adama Barrow, has confirmed that Yahyah Jammeh has agreed to step down.

Barrow, who was sworn-in at the Gambian Embassy in Senegal on Thursday, announced this on his Twitter page on Friday.

“I would like to inform you that Yahya Jammeh has agreed to step down.

“He is scheduled to depart Gambia today.#NewGambia.”

Barrow defeated Jammeh in the presidential elections last month.

But Jammeh has been reluctant to hand over power, despite initially conceding defeat .

He had reportedly asked the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), for an extension to the deadline given to him to vacate office.

The ECOWAS troops have already taken over large parts of The Gambia and are now on Banjul, the capital where they met with almost no resistance.
