Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has condemned the coup attempt by soldiers in Gabon on Monday.
DAILY POST earlier reported that a group of soldiers attempted to take power. They made a radio appeal for a popular uprising against ailing President Ali Bongo, who is abroad recovering from stroke.
Soldiers in the West African country said they launched the coup to restore democracy.
President Bongo, who took over power in 2009, reportedly suffered a stroke in October and was receiving treatment in Morocco.
Reacting to the failed coup, Atiku said military rule has no place in Africa.
The former Vice President further called on African Union to oppose forceful alteration of government.
Atiku on his Twitter page wrote: “The attempted coup in Gabon stands condemned. Military rule is an aberration and has no place in Africa.
“The African Union, in line with its rules, should stand firm on its zero tolerance for forceful alteration of government on the continent.”
Meanwhile, Gabonese Presidency giving update on the situation in a statement made available by WestAfrican.co, said Security forces stormed the radio station in the capital Libreville to retake it, killing two rebel troops, arresting their leader and freeing journalists who had been forced to help rebels make their appeal.
