Workers of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Oye-Ekiti have called on the Federal Government to investigate the last promotion exercise which they claimed was marred by nepotism, favouritism and irregularities.
They commended the decision of the Federal Government to name the university after the former Military Governor of old Western State, Maj.-Gen. Adeyinka Adebayo which they described as a welcome development.
“The honour bestowed on the great man is a welcome development for his contributions to the university of our beloved nation, Nigeria,” the workers said in a statement.
Acting under the aegis of Non Academic Staff Union (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), the workers also demanded the sack of the Registrar, Mr. Daniel Adeyemo.
They condemned the management’s insistence that only staff who scored 85 per cent and above as average in their APER form would be considered for promotion as against the 50 per cent in the extant rules.
The unions claim that only cronies of the management benefited from the promotion, alleging that due process was set aside in the exercise.
The university workers conveyed their positions in a joint statement signed by chairmen of NASU, Adebayo Dada; SSANU, Mutiu Ademola; NAAT, Ekundayo Ajibaye which was given to reporters in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital on Wednesday.
The statement reads: “The Joint Congress of the above-named Unions hereby passes a vote of no confidence on the Registrar of the University, Mr. Daniel Adeyemo for is high evel of incompetence and ineptitude.
“The unanimous conclusion was that, had the Registrar been competentenough and as an Acting Registrar from inception, the University would not have found herself in the mess it is currently faced with.
“The Joint Congress of the Unions had resolved that for the university to move forward, the Registrar, Mr. Daniel Adeyemo had to be relieved of his appointment and in the interest of general peace and industrial harmony.”
In his reaction the university spokesman, Godfrey Bakji, described the unions’ allegations as false, baseless and unfounded, maintaining that the promotion was carried out based on the available vacancies.
Bakji stressed that the workers cannot substantiate their allegations of corrupt practices, promotion irregularities and favouritism levelled against the management stressing that anybody that raises allegation must go ahead and prove same.
He said there was no reason to demand the sack of the Registrar whom he said had not gone outside the statutes of the university in performing his functions.
