Steven Gerrard has played his last game at Anfield on Saturday in a 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace.
Players from both teams formed a guard of honour for the Reds captain, who fought back tears as he addressed the crowd. He was also presented with an award by former boss, Gerard Houllier and chief executive, Ian Ayre after the game.
He said: “I am going to miss it so much. I’ve loved every minute of it and I’m absolutely devastated I’m never going to play in front of these supporters again.
“I think it’s very difficult to pick one, but I think the very first time I ran out at this ground – this was a moment I’ll never forget. Everything after that was a bonus for me. The very first time I played for Liverpool was an absolute dream.
“The club are in good hands, we’ve got great owners and a fantastic manager in Brendan. There’s unbelievable potential in the squad.
“I’m sure there will be some new signings in the coming weeks, but looking round the dressing room, I love the players in there to death. I wish them every success in the future.
“I’d like to thank everyone at the club who’s helped me over the last 17 years, from top to bottom. I’d like to thank all the staff who have helped me, and all the ex-players I’ve played alongside.
“But most of all, I’d like to thank the fans. These supporters here stand out more than any. I’ve played in front of most supporters around the world, but you are the best.”
