Fulani killings: Benue people voted Buhari but he rewarded us with dead bodies – Bishop Avenya

The Catholic Bishop of Gboko Diocese, Benue State, Bishop William Avenya, has slammed the Nigerian government over its loud silence on the killing of Benue citizens by Fulani herdsmen.

The Holy Father said it was sad and unfortunate that after voting overwhelmingly for the current government during the 2015 general elections only for them to be rewarded with dead bodies of their citizens courtesy of Fulani attacks.

Bishop Avenya made this statement in Makurdi on Thursday at the mass burial of the over 70 victims of the recent attacks perpetrated by the Fulani herdsmen in Guma and Logo LGAs of the state.

The ‘tear-laden’ Bishop noted that the attack was a deliberate attempt to push Benue into extinction.

He also faulted a statement credited to the Police IG, Ibrahim Idris that the attack were ‘mere’ communal clashes.

“We stand here today to declare that enough is enough. We say no to this barbaric, inhuman and gruesome murder of our kinsmen.

“This attack is a way of killing the spirit. This is a planned attempt to kill our sociocultural life. But we refuse to die.

“We voted for this government in 2015 with the hope that they would protect us but they gave us dead bodies as reward. Enough is enough.

“The Benue spirit refuses to die. We call on President Muhammadu Bubari to remember his speech when he was sworn in that he belongs to nobody but to everybody.”
