Methodist Church Nigeria has urged the Federal Government to urgently halt the perennial fuel scarcity that has adversely affected economic activities across the country.

Rt. Rev. Lawson Elom, the Methodist Bishop of Abakaliki Diocese, made the call in his State of the Nation address during the 22nd Annual Synod, on Tuesday in Abakaliki.

According to him, the fuel situation in the country has subjected the people to untold hardship.

“No leader has satisfactorily explained the cause of the scarcity, as the oil which God used in blessing the country has turned into an essential commodity.

“Many car owners have parked their cars due to the scarcity. Nigeria has the financial capabilities to revamp its refineries to refine locally produced crude oil,” he said.

The cleric also urged the Federal Government to address the menace of Fulani herdsmen in many parts of the country.

“The activities of the herdsmen recently are gradually taking a national course which needs to be halted by the Federal Government.

“Government’s intervention will prevent an impending inter-tribal conflict, as the police in particular have raised alarm of such activities especially at Agatu community of Benue,’’ he said.

In his address, Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence, Samuel Uche, urged Nigerian leaders and the people to pray fervently for God’s intervention in the problems confronting the country.

“The country is confronted with issues of insecurity, ethnic and religious fanaticism, economic recession, balkanisation threat by some groups, among others.

“Government at all levels should create the enabling environment for the resuscitation of the economy which would enable the youths in particular to be self-reliant,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the conference is: ‘Chosen to Bear Fruits,’ while issues concerning the growth of the church in the state and country was also discussed. (NAN)
