Fuel scarcity: MTN threatens to shut down, as litre goes close to N500 in Lagos


Telecommunication giant, MTN has warned that the ongoing scarcity of fuel across the nation may force it to shut down.

The company said it needed a “significant quantity of diesel in the very near future to prevent a shutdown of services across Nigeria”.

“If diesel supplies are not received within the next 24 hours the network will be seriously degraded and customers will feel the impact,” it added on its Twitter account @MTNNG on Saturday evening.

The scarcity has since forced top Lagos-based radio station, BeatFM to shut down.

DAILY POST observed that in Ejigbo area of Lagos, a litre was sold for N500 as at Saturday evening by black marketers.

Our correspondent confirms that precisely in Afolabi One Street, a litre was sold for N500 as at 8pm on Saturday.

Speaking with our reporter, a barber who gave his name as Shola said he had no choice because some customers were waiting to have their hair cut.

“I just bought a litre for N500. I no get choice oo, customers dey ground and I can’t tell them I don’t have petrol in my generator. Only God knows when this will end,” he said.

In Enugu, our correspondent reports that a litre goes for N150 in some areas while in Benue State, DAILY POST learnt that a litre goes for 200 in some filling stations while black marketers sell for 250.
