The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Ebonyi State chapter, Comrade Ikechukwu Nwafor, who was allegedly attacked by the police during a rally on Thursday over increment in petrol price by the federal government, says the police treated them like common armed robbers.
He was said to have slumped after he was released on Friday by the police and was immediately rushed to the hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.
New Telegraph is reporting that Nwafor has been hospitalised at the emergency ward of the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki, FETHA 2, after he was beaten up and arrested by the state police command.
Speaking from his hospital bed on Friday, Nwafor, who sustained leg and hand injuries during the incident, alleged that the labour leaders were indiscriminately attacked in their bus and their phones confiscated.
Nwafor decried the action of the police saying they were handled like common criminals, adding that he was tear-gassed, beaten up alongside 20 other labour leaders, and thrown into a police Hilux van and taken to the Ebonyi State Police Headquarters where he was detained by operatives of the Command.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, ASP George Okafor, when contacted, confirmed the incident, saying efforts were on to arrest the officers who would have indulged in such acts.
Okafor added that they will be made to face the law.
