The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, called on all transport companies in Enugu to henceforth take issues of retraining their drivers as a matter of priority.
The Corps said accidents involving commercial vehicles had spiral effects and as such needed to be checked.
Enugu State Sector Commander of the FRSC, who was represented by the Sector Admin and Human Resources, Mr Uga Anthony Okoronkwo, spoke at the headquarters of the Peace Mass Transit during the flag-off of a retraining programme of the company’s drivers.
Okoronkwo said other transporters should emulate the PMT and take issues of safety with utmost seriousness.
“I commend the management of the Peace Mass Transit for always taking the lead in retraining their drivers. This is not the first time, it has been a continuous exercise, which should be emulated by other transporters.
“This training is critical because it has to do with life. You have to be very careful because what you are doing is not good enough so you have to improve.
“So, I expect all of you to listen properly to any little tip our men will give you today. After the training, there will be test to see how competent you are,” he said.
Also speaking at the event, the Chairman and Managing Director of Peace Group of companies, Mr Maduka Onyishi, represented by the Vice Chairman, Mrs Emilia Onyishi said that there was need for the company to minimize the rate of road accidents involving the transport company as it values the lives of its passengers and drivers as well.
She said although the drivers were retrained on a daily basis, there was need to bring in road safety professionals to educate them for better performance.
“Why we came here this afternoon is for retraining our drivers. We do this on a daily basis but we have to invite professionals in the field to give our drivers the safety training they need for the safety of our passengers.
“We want to minimize accidents on the road. It is important for us to know those man made causes of accidents so that we can reduce the rate of accidents on our roads.
“The FRSC are well qualified for this training. We are friends with the FRSC. I urge the drivers not to be here just to fulfill all righteousness but to abide by the lessons available here”, she said.
