The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Plateau, on Saturday warned motorists against driving under the influence of alcohol.

Acting Sector Commander in the state, Ibrahim Bello, gave the warning at the commencing of “Ember Months’’ campaign, organised by FRSC Unit in Hawan Kibo, Ryom Local Government Area.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the campaign had “Don’t Drink and Drive’’ as theme.

Bello also warned motorists to desist from night journeys, saying that it was dangerous ‘’and deadly.’’

He explained that the campaign was specifically focussed on reducing crashes and making the roads safer for all users.

“’Our aim in these `ember months’ is to focus on how to make the highways safer for all users and to also reduce carnages to the barest minimum.

“The choice of ‘Don’t Drink and Drive’ is a conscious effort to reawaken drivers to the ills of alcohol intake while driving.

“Records have shown that drunk driving, speeding and overloading account for most of the fatal accidents on highways, especially during ends of the year,’’ he said.

On his part, the Hawan Kibo Unit Commander, Mr Kamla Dakup, said that the campaign was an annual event designed to educate the public on safety measures to be taken while on the highway.

Dakup said that safety should be everyone’s business, hence the need for all to be careful and conscious while plying highways.

“It is obvious that safety is everybody’s business, which implies that both the passengers and drivers need to take extra care while on the road.

“’Traffic crashes have killed so many bread winners of families who would have been a solution to this generation and the generation yet unborn.

“Let me therefore warn in strong terms against drunk-driving, overloading, recklessness, speeding and dangerous overtaking,’’ he said.

He advised motorists to always run a check on their vehicles before taking to road as that would assist drivers to ascertain the condition of their vehicles.

Dakup warned against underage driving, unlicensed persons driving and non-use of seat belt while driving, saying that the commission would arrest and prosecute offenders. (NAN)
