The House of Representatives on Tuesday, continued the process of amendment of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, law.
The Bill was voted on, passed and referred to the House Committee on FRSC.

Coming under bills for second reading, the Bill seeks to Amend the Federal Road Safety Commission Act, Cap. F19 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 to Provide for Payment of all Monies Received by the Commission into the Federation Account in Accordance with Section 162 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, to Provide for Establishment of a Paramedic Corps of the Federal Road Safety Commission, to reduce Road Accidents and Fatalities by mandating the use of Child Restraints in Vehicle and a Resting Period for Drivers covering long Distance.
It also seeks to Repeal the Federal Road Safety Commission Act and Enact a Bill for an Act to Establish the Nigeria Road Safety Commission with Responsibility for Traffic Management, Prevention and Minimization of Road Traffic Crashes, the Supervision of users of such Roads, the Regulations of Traffic thereon, Clearing of Obstructions on any part of the Roads, the Education of Drivers, Motorists and other Members of the Public generally on the proper use of the Roads; and for Related Matters (HBs. 932, 939, 796 and 1328.
Hon. Yunusa Abubakar moved for the second reading of the Bill and it was seconded by Hon. Edward Pwajok.
In leading the debate, Hon. Yunusa stated that the Bill intends a complete overhaul of the Act establishing the Federal Road Safety Corps.
He said: “Even after several Amendments, the Act still doesn’t reflect practicality of making the Nigerian roads safe. The necessary reforms still do not exist in the present structure.
“Discrepancies have also been identified in the fines and punishments meted to different people for same offenses and different procedures for procurement of some traffic tools for different individuals.”
Hon. Edward Pwajok in contributing to the debate stated that the Bill seeks to Amend, Repeal and Inject certain Sections in the Principal Act.
The lawmaker further noted that the bill seeks to ensure that drivers traveling long distances break their journeys and rest a while before proceeding.
