The Edo FRSC sector commander, Mr Oluwasusi Familoni has decried the reckless abuse of the siren by some security operatives on Nigerian roads.

Familoni expressed the displeasure while addressing drivers and members of the public at the FRSC Tollgate unit command `s Ember Month flag off on Thursday in Benin.

The sector commander said the law on the use of siren was still in force, saying that apart from the offices of the President, the leadership of the National Assembly and Governors, with some designated security and other departments, “the use of the siren by any other person is illegal.

“Even though we have powers to arrest offenders, we are handicapped by the constraint of the political will.

“We are only appealing to those who illegally engage in the indiscriminate use of the siren to desist from the act to avoid avoidable road crashes.

“This reckless use of the siren, most times are responsible for accidents as they harass other road users, who in their confusion lose focus and concentration which result in accidents,’’ he said.

Familoni appealed o the heads of sister security agencies, in line with the theme of this year’s Ember month campaign– “Road safety is a shared responsibility –it depends on you’’, to impress it on their personnel the need to refrain from the reckless use of the siren.

Earlier, the unit commander, Adewale Ameen urged road users to always ensure that they abide by all traffic laws to stay alive.

Ameen disclosed that the commission would soon commence the policy of compelling transport company owners to install speed limit devices in their vehicles as a way of reducing road crashes on Nigerian roads.
