Four SARS operatives nabbed over death of car dealer in Benin

The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended four operatives attached to the State Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, over the death of a Benin-based car dealer identified as Benson Obode.

According to reports, the four policemen, Adeleke Adedeji, Oniyon Musa, Henry Sobowale and Abena John, are being detained in custody of the Lagos Police Command and would soon be transferred to Benin City.

It was gathered that Benson was arrested by the officers on 21st May, for allegedly buying a stolen Ash Coloured Peugeot 306, but later died while in their custody in Benin City. The corpse of the deceased was said to have been dumped at the Central Hospital Mortuary.

Reacting to the deceased’s death, Benson’s landlord, Monday Omosigho, disclosed that he saw the deceased been tortured by the police at the Edo police command headquarters.

It was further gathered that the Lagos State Police Command told some journalists from a radio station in Benin that Benson died from mob action. This came on the heels of a frantic search by the deceased’s family members two months after his arrest.‎

Benson’s elder brother identified as Solomon said the incident said the police should also account for the missing N200,000 and ATM cards that were on the deceased on the fateful day.
