Sam Allardyce has revealed that he turned down an offer to return to Newcastle.
The 64-year-old was in charge of the Magpies from 2007 to 2008, but was sacked after just 24 games in charge and was replaced by Kevin Keegan.
However, Newcastle owner, Mike Ashley was keen on getting Allardyce back.
“I was extremely surprised I think, but we never really got to the sort of talks everyone is suggesting,” Allardyce told talkSPORT.
“I had a chat with my agent, and as much as I respect Newcastle, Newcastle fans and Mike [Ashley] it wasn’t for me, I politely said no and moved on.
“It was about not going back, that thing in my mind about not going back. Maybe if it was the first time round I’d have jumped at it, but not now. But I appreciate the offer and I was surprised.
“I was very flattered that I was considered, but it was about not going back.
“I had a think about it, but it wasn’t something I thought about too long, I thought it would be better for everybody if I made a quick decision because they’re in pre-season now, I’d have had to be there in a day.
“I never spoke to Mike, it was just my agent contacting me. I had a quick think about it and look at the situation and thanked them very much for contacting Mark, but not for me.”
