A former Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Chief Friday Aderemi, is dead, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

He was said to have died on Tuesday at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti, at the age of 74.

Gov. Kayode Fayemi had already commiserated with the family of the deceased.

In a condolence message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Olayinka Oyebode, the governor described Aderemi’s death as shocking and a personal loss.

Aderemi, who made history as a three-day acting governor during the tenure of former Gov. Ayo Fayose, was once a prominent member of the PDP.

The former speaker, a native of Ayetoro-Ekiti in Ido/Osi Local Government Area of Ekiti State was elected in 2003 to represent Ido/Osi Constituency II in the Ekiti State House of Assembly.

The Electrical /Electronics engineer became Speaker in 2004 after the removal of his predecessor, Sola Ajigbolamu, under the Ayodele Fayose-led government .

The deceased played a lead role in the events that eventually led to the impeachment of Fayose and his former deputy, Mrs Biodun Olujimi , on Oct. 16, 2006.

Aderemi as then Speaker was installed the acting governor on Oct. 16, 2006 before the proclamation of emergency rule by ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo on Oct. 18, 2006.

The deceased and the impeached Olujimi had both laid claims to the governorship position.

Aderemi, however, was to join the All Progressives Congress in later years.

The former acting governor was a Senior Special Assistant to Gov. Kayode Fayemi and was until his death the Chairman of Ekiti State Education Trust Fund. (NAN)
