Forget zonal congress – Tukur tells PDP South-West leaders

Bamanga Tukur

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Bamanga Tukur, has rejected the request by the South-west leaders of the party to hold its zonal congress on Thursday.

Chieftains including Iyiola Omisore, Ishola Filani, Buruji kashamu, Yekini Adeojo, Musiliu Obanikoro, and Abiodun Olujinmi, yesterday conferred with Tukur in Abuja on the issue.

In his response, the chairman explained to the delegation that aside the court injunction restraining the party from conducting the congress, there was no logistics to go ahead with the exercise.

The National Executive Committee of the PDP had during its meeting last Thursday, suspended the conduct of the South West Congress following an injunction by an Ekiti State High Court.

Former Ekiti governor, Segun Oni, who is battling to reclaim the position of PDP National Vice Chairman, South West, had dragged the party to court, challenging the plan to fill the position from which he was sacked.

Sources say the presidency is not favourably disposed to the conduct of the congress, as going against the order will portray President Goodluck Jonathan as a leader supporting illegality.

It may also affect the fragile peace brokered to have a united house ahead of the forthcoming national convention.

The event is scheduled to hold on Saturday August 31 in Abuja.
