Forgery of Senate Rules: Senate has powers to summon AGF – Presidency

The Presidency on Friday said Senate has the powers to summon the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami over the alleged forgery of senate rules.

Special Assistant on National Assembly Matters, Senate, Sen Ita Enang to President Muhammadu Buhari said this while responding to comments credited to the Special Assistant on Prosecution, Okoi Obono-Oblo in the office of the AFG saying the upper legislative chambers lacks the powers to summon the AGF over the ongoing forgery case.

Speaking with reporters, Enang faulted the statement, stressing that the AGF being a subordinate of the Presidency was also answerable to the senate.

According to Enang, “There was no way the AGF will disrespect the lawmakers because the same Senators screened and cleared the ministers as ministerial nominees.”

Recall that the AGF had for the second time on Thursday refused to honour an invitation by the upper legislative chambers to explain the charges filed against the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, his Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and two others for alleged forgery of the Senate Standing Order.

Obono-Oblo who had appeared before the Senator David Umaru, led Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters on behalf of the Attorney General had stated that the senate was not empowered by the constitution to summon the AGF over the matter which was before a competent court of law.
