Foreign Affairs Minister identifies UK, Switzerland as major loot destinations

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama, has identified the United Kingdom, UK, and Switzerland as the major destination where corrupt government officials deposit their stolen funds. In view of this, he said he has met with representatives from Switzerland, which according to him, have a large chunk of the loot, over modalities for the repatriation of stolen funds in their custody.

The minister, who disclosed this to newsmen shortly after inaugurating 113 candidates at the 22nd Regular Course of the Service Academy in Abuja, explained that aside Switzerland, the government was talking with the United Kingdom to return some public funds, hinting that both countries are major loot destinations

He pointed out that President Muhammadu Buhari’s maiden visit to the United States has also helped to soften the ground for the discussions on the repatriation of the funds.

His words, “We are in negotiation with countries for the repatriation of the stolen funds stashed in other countries. We are in touch with the government of Switzerland and we recently recovered quite some huge amount of money. Just last week, I met with Switzerland representatives to work out the modalities for the repatriation of the fund.

“There is still ongoing discussion with other countries like United Kingdom. The goodwill generated by President Buhari especially with his first visit to United States has helped enormously in the whole process. And many other countries have been helping in terms of cooperation.”
