Flood, mudslide destroy 3 villages in Yobe

A heavy downpour which resulted in mudslide and flooding in Gashaka, Janga Tsiri and part of Maluri town in Fika Local Govt Area of Yobe State has destroyed three villages and swept away many farm lands, foodstuffs and rendered many people homeless.

Speaking with journalists at the scene on Friday, one of the victims who gave his name as Mallam Wakili Baba said,” I am living with my extended famly members now after losing my house to the flood. We don’t have food now as all we had have been destroyed by the flood. We are appealing to Yobe State Government and all agencies of disaster management to come to our aid by assisting us with shelter and food.”

Another victim, Ibrahim Ahmed said, ” My four bedrooms house has been washed by the flood. It came in the night and before we discovered anything, we are in a pool and quickly evacuated. We are now counting our loses, the house collapsed short after we evacuated, but we lost animals, foodstuffs, livestock feed, clothing and other properties washed away by the flood.”

The flood also cut off some settlement from the council headquarters and other parts of the area, as one of the major bridges was also washed away. Also the stream which is the only source of drinking water in the community with a population of over one million people was flooded.

Our Correspondent reports that, this development had caused women and children to walk long distance in search of drinking water.

Also speaking on the flood disaster, Chairman Fika Local Govt Area. Hon Adamu Usman Bazam said the devastation is an act of God, and that there is nothing the people would do than to pray for assistance for now before they can pick up the pieces and continue with their lives.

“On receiving the report, l immediately visited the scene and took the report to the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) for intervention. I also reported to the Deputy Speaker of Yobe State House of Assembly, Dr Ibrahim Kurmi being an indigene to assist in pushing our demand for assistance to the government,” he said.
