Head coach of Nigeria’s women U-17 team, Bala Nikyu, has expressed confidence that the Flamingoes can emerge champions at the Women’s World Cup.

Nikyu was speaking on Saturday, after his girls thrashed South Africa 6-0, in the first leg of their final qualifying round for the World Cup, which will be staged in Jordan later this year.

“Our target is to qualify for the World Cup in Jordan, and try to make history by becoming the first African side to win the World Cup at women’s level. We can do it if we get the necessary preparation and support,” he told Completesportsnigeria.com.

“On the win over South Africa, we could have scored more than six goals if the girls had slowed down in the second half. We know we can also beat them at their home In the return leg, so no qualms about not scoring more than six here in Abuja

“Having had the first experience in Trinidad and Tobago, we shall go the Jordan wiser, and I am optimistic that we can win in Jordan and be world champions.

“That is our target and we are focusing on that.”

Two years ago, Nkiyu led the Flamingos to a second round finish in Trinidad and Tobago.
