Five school principals suspended in Enugu for laxity

For failing to meet up with their job responsibilities, five school principals have been suspended for one academic term by the Enugu State Post Primary School Management Board (PPSMB).

Consequently, the affected principals would not be allowed to participate in any school activities during the period of the suspension, which has already commenced since January, 2013.

The Chairman of the board, Dr Gabriel Okafor, while speaking on the development said the measure was to sanitize the education system in the state, noting that the principals failed to report to duties for two weeks.

He said: “It was observed that some teachers do not like to work in rural areas and instead influence their transfers to the urban areas. “The board would no longer allow transfers unless such persons had stayed for upward of four years in a place of posting.

“In addition, some of the staff fail to turn up for work, while some will appear, just register their names and leave until the next day.”

The chairman said he assumed office in January 2012 and initiated morning assembly at 7.30 a.m. daily in a bid to get the staff to come to work.

He said rather than conduct morning assembly at 7:30 according to the board’s directive, teachers and principals “don’t come to school early at all, thereby abandoning their responsibilities for the students”.
