Fire guts wood depot in Yobe [PHOTOS]

Logs of wood worth hundreds of thousands were today burnt to ashes following a fire outbreak that gutted Damaturu wood depot.

The sudden fire outbreak at the temporary wood depot occurred shortly after the Friday prayer.

With the timely intervention of the Yobe State Fire Service who came with two vehicles, the raging fire was successfully quenched leaving charcoals in its wake.

The afternoon fire incident drew the attention of residents of the metropolis, who stormed the scene to catch a glimpse of the inferno.

Speaking on the situation, the Chairman of Wood Sellers Association, Malam Manu Baka-layi said the sudden fire outbreak came to them as a surprise.

“It happened when we returned from Friday prayer where we noticed smoke coming out from the dried grasses and within a blink of an eye there was a flame all over the place, so we immediately put a distress call to the fire service office who promptly responded,” Baka-layi recounted.

The chairman said he will soon call for a meeting to discuss with his members on how to prepare for, and handle unforeseen circumstances such as today’s fire to avert future recurrence.

Baka-layi, however, appealed to the authorities to allocate a place for them to settle well for their trade.
