Fire guts Potiskum grains market, raizes shops

Seven shops have been razed down by an early morning inferno at grinders’ section of Potiskum grains market in Yobe state, consuming grains and grinding machines worth millions of Naira.

According to Abdullahi Musa, an eye witness who operates his business close to the market said the fire started at about 3:30 am Friday, though it was put off by the state zonal firefighters before it could further escalate to other parts of the market.

“A total of 7 shops with about 30 bags of 50kg of grains such as maize and groundnut including 6 grinding machines were burnt to ashes”, the eye witness stated.

He said electricity has been identified as the caused of the inferno, but could not ascertain whether it was due to high voltage or wrong connection on the part of the business operators at the section.

DAILY POST gathered that no life was lost in the incident, but victims are still counting loses.

Potiskum grains market is believed to be the largest in northeast region where merchants from different parts of the country come to transact businesses on a daily basis.
