The President-elect, General Mohammadu Buhari, has been called upon to wage war against corruption so as to make the country a conducive place for doing business.
This call was made in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, by the Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association, Ilesa, Mr. Olayinka Sokoya, in an interview with the Punch.
According to Sokoya, the mass exodus of Nigerians to foreign countries, including South Africa, where they have been facing xenophobic attacks, was because of the country’s bad economy, adding that Nigerians are trooping out of the country on daily basis because they want to escape the harsh economic condition at home.
He said: “The President-elect should be unsparing in his war against corruption. He should wage a serious war against corruption and ensure that his administration goes after every corrupt official.
“If our leaders can make the situation in the country better, I believe foreign nationals, even from Europe, will begin to troop into our country.
“One of the biggest problems in Nigeria is corruption and this is affecting a lot of things.
“There is also high cost of doing business here in Nigeria. The economy is bad and that is another area the President-elect should face. He should make Nigeria conducive to do business.
“If this is done, Nigerian youths will stop rushing out of the country. If the conditions are okay, Nigerians will no longer troop out of the country. Many of them do not like where they are residing but they were forced out of the country by our poor economy.”
Calling on the incoming government to tackle the rate of unemployment, which, he said, had worsened the poverty level among Nigerians, Sokoya argued that artisans and others would be relieved if the Buhari administration could solve the problem of epileptic supply of electricity.
