The United Nations, UN, says the fight against Boko Haram terrorists in Nigeria is suffering from lack of funding.
The UN condemned, in strong terms, the violence of the Islamist extremist group which it described as heinous, barbaric and unconscionable.
The UN Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mr. Stephen O’Brien said the violence has led to serious human rights violations in the country.
BBC News is reporting that O’Brien made this known to the UN Security Council on Thursday.
He accused Boko Haram terrorists of perpetrating almost unimaginable violence and brutality in Nigeria.
He said, “Boko Haram has pledged allegiance to the so-called Islamic State and the militant group’s actions has forced thousands to flee and left unprecedented numbers in need.
“More than nine million people in the region need humanitarian assistance.
“Nigeria is bearing the brunt of the crisis. From January to June 2016, more than 50 children have been coerced to carry out suicide bombings.
“Boko Haram remains a threat to stability in Nigeria, despite the group being pushed back from some areas and the fight against the insurgents is suffering from lack of funding. A lot needs to be done.”
